Context

Norwood School is a coeducational independent day school which serves approximately 450 students from Pre-k through 8th grade on its sprawling 40-acre campus. Founded by Frances March in 1952, the school’s vision was clear—to establish a school where children feel loved, nurtured, challenged, and known, cultivating the confidence to take risks, be creative, and develop critical thinking skills. In an effort to address the growing needs of the school, Norwood School introduced the Our Children, Our Purpose campaign. One outcome of this campaign initiative was the Marriott Early Childhood Building.

Solution

Through close collaboration with stakeholders, CGS Architects brought to fruition a stunning 25,000-square-foot, 3-story building designed to foster the growth and development of Pre-K through 2nd-grade students. The building harmoniously integrates flexibility, collaboration, and innovation, boasting versatile teaching spaces, vibrant community commons, and a 2,800-square-foot Lower School Library.

Adorned with inspirational quotations and featuring overhead lighting that resembles a leafy canopy, the library becomes an imaginative space that echoes Norwood School’s distinctive identity. On the upper floors, well-lit classrooms provide ample space for engaging and enjoyable learning experiences. The classroom design incorporates solid walls on the lower two-thirds, maintaining a sense of privacy, while large windows above introduce transparency. This thoughtful arrangement creates open and inviting spaces without distracting students, striking a balance between illumination and focus. The outdoor courtyard is expansive and inviting, serving as a secure haven for educational activities, play, and community gatherings. Norwood School’s architectural design underscores the effective blend of form and function, encouraging exploration and inspiration throughout the building.
