See How We're Responding to Covid-19

"Weather" you plan your days by the Farmer's Almanac, the political winds of the campaign season, or the schedules of your favorite teams, we're all reminded that as we prepare for playoff baseball and football, there is also a colder reality that for many, basic needs will get even harder to meet. While playoff excitement soars, thermometers plummet, forcing too many of our neighbors to make increasingly difficult choices about how to provide for themselves and their families.

Our inspiration comes from the passion that fired up fans at Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium for generations. While it gave life to an energy that fueled City Championships, MLS titles, MLB pennant races, and Super Bowls, RFKanucopia will give back by sharing a bounty to help tackle hunger. Our team aims to tap home plate one last time, swing for the fences, and hit one out of the park against hunger.

We also took home the award for Best Stadium/Arena out of 38 teams!

Note about CANstruction:
CANstruction is a nationwide program that aims to raise awareness about hunger. In DC, CANstruction is organized by the Washington Architectural Foundation as a creative design-build competition that benefits the Capital Area Food Bank through donations of canned goods. Teams from architecture and design firms from Washington, DC use their skills to build sculptures out of cans of food. The nutritious shelf-stable food is donated to the CAFB for distribution to those in need after the event.

What is the best piece of advice you have ever received?
The ultimate judge of one’s work is yourself. Work with integrity and you’ll feel satisfied with your accomplishments.

What made you want to work in the architecture and design field?
Everything we see in the “built” world was designed by someone, for good or ill. Being able to contribute to the world around us and moreover, create places for human use, enjoyment and perhaps inspiration is incredibly fulfilling.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and your past experience.
I’ve got a very eclectic background: I first became a journeyman sheetmetal worker through a shipyard apprentice program, worked as a tugboat deck hand - wanted to become a captain, became a self-taught leaded and figural glass artist - practicing for almost 20 years eventually embarking on a career in architecture.

Simplify.

What made you want to work in the architecture/design field?
In high school, I was introduced to the Bauhaus and was captivated by its modern vision, functionality and simplistic elegance. This artistic movement was the subject of my final research project and a major source of inspiration, motivating me to become an architect.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and your past experience.
I grew up in Barcelona, Spain, where I also studied architecture. After finishing my studies, I had the opportunity to work on the renovation of Casa Vicens, one of the first houses designed by Antoni Gaudí, built in 1886. Being my first project after architecture school, this was a once in a lifetime experience that set my career in motion.

Be Kind.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself.
My personal mantra is so ingrained, it’s also my blood type, “B Positive.”

What made you want to work in the architecture/design field?
The philosophy of “improving the world” is so fundamental, that combined with an abiding interest in how we, as humans, each with our own personal “contexts”, interpret and understand the uncountable overlapping worlds around us, made gravitating into a career combining building and design almost inevitable.

What made you want to work in the architecture/design field?
As a child living abroad in Europe, I was fortunate enough to travel and visit beautiful cities rich in history and architecture. This really instilled a love and interest for buildings and public spaces at a young age.

On the last Monday of every month we will highlight a member of our CGS team. For July, get to know Joe Lobos from Miami, FL!

Tell us a fun fact about yourself:
I grew up in sunny Miami, Florida. Growing up, I learned how to play four instruments: piano, cello, flute, and guitar. I also took lessons to fly a cessna right after high school. I’ve become fascinated with the world of wine as of late and have recently become WSET Level II certified.

What made you want to work in the architecture/design field?
I grew up in Miami during the downtown building boom and became fascinated with buildings. My music upbringing also played a big role in my decision to pursue architecture. Music is also a discipline where both creativity and technical precision are needed.

Tell us about your past work experiences.
I studied architecture at the University of Miami (B.Arch - Class of 2012). After graduation, I began working at a luxury residential architecture firm in Miami. I joined CGS Architects when I moved to Washington DC the summer of 2017.
