cox graae + spack architects designed the Operator’s Control House for the new Woodrow Wilson Memorial Bridge (I-95 and I-495) over the Potomac River. Local review agencies requested that the design of the tower be artful and consistent with the height of the new bridge. The new tower is a slender 6-story concrete and steel structure supported by one of the bridge’s monumental supports. The controller’s observation level, 25 feet above the highway, is completely glass-enclosed allowing for 360-degree visibility of highway approaches and unobstructed views of the river.
