The District of Columbia Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) and The Department of General Services (DGS) commissioned cox graae + spack architects to design the new Ridge Road Community Center located in SE Washington DC. The new building is built in place of an existing and dated community center. The project site included an existing pool and pool house, a field house, basketball courts and playgrounds. The existing pool house has been removed. The existing field house and swimming pool were maintained and updated. The Community Center is located centrally on the site immediately north of the existing pool in order to support the pool functions. The massing of the building consists of two major volumes connected by a third minor (circulation) volume between them. The volume along the west edge of the building (nearest to Ridge Road) houses the community meeting functions. The volume at the east side of the building houses the gymnasium and locker rooms. An outdoor basketball court and two new play areas are located north of the Community Center building. Parking is located on the west side of the site with access off of Ridge Road.
