cox graae + spack architects designed the expansion of the internationally renowned Phillips Collection, Center for the Study of Modern Art. The museum’s plan for expansion led them to acquire an adjacent historic apartment house. cox graae + spack architects designed an addition behind the retained historic front façade to seamlessly extend the existing museum levels and add two new underground levels. The new structure includes an auditorium, library and archives, seminar rooms, administrative offices, resident artist studio, additional gallery space and an outdoor sculpture garden. A new museum entrance provides increased visitor services and an enlarged gift shop and café.
