The District of Columbia Department of General Services (DGS) has engaged cox graae + spack architects to design an entirely new Orr Elementary School on the site of the existing school at 2200 Minnesota Avenue, SE, Washington, DC 20020. The existing building and site features will be completely removed in the course of constructing the new school building and site. The new Orr Elementary School will have a capacity of 492 students and 76 staff and will provide a 21st century learning environment in an open, light filled, and sheltering state of the art and green building and site. cox graae + spack architects and the design team worked with the DGS and District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) teams, the school leadership and School Improvement Team (SIT) to learn about the school’s unique culture and the larger community needs and concerns as a prelude to developing Site Concepts for the new Orr Elementary School. Concept Options were reviewed with DGS / DCPS, the school leadership and the SIT and a preferred option was selected as best representing the varied needs, wants and goals for the new Orr Elementary School.
