Thanks to an involved community and support from the Department of General Services (DGS) and Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) in the District of Columbia, the new Ridge Road Community Center is finally underway. Last week, the project’s groundbreaking ceremony took place, nearly 15 years after the conversation of a new community center at 830 Ridge Road, SE first began.
The project’s builder, Tompkins Builders, joined cox graae + spack architects for the one hour ceremony, with speaking appearances by Mayor Vincent Gray, Council-member Yvette Alexander of Ward 7. DGS’ Director, Brian Hanlon, and DPR representatives expressed their excitement and support of the project, a sentiment shared by local community groups, churches and individuals present.
The facility will be approximately 22,000 sqft and is designed to achieve USGBC’s LEED standards. The completed project will boast a competition size basketball court in a new state of the art gymnasium and community rooms to serve a number of functions including :
-Arts + Crafts Room
-Multipurpose Room with Commercial Teaching Kitchen
The center will also include an outdoor pool, two playgrounds, an outdoor basketball court, a football field and additional parking. Construction of the new Ridge Road Community Center is expected to conclude in November 2015.
