Earlier this week, the National Presbyterian School community came together to celebrate the groundbreaking ceremony for this summer’s exciting renovation project. cox graae + spack architects has worked with NPS since 2008, and began shaping the design of this specific project a little over a year ago.  The decision to expand and renovate the school was prompted by increased enrollment and supported by new leadership.

Elements of the Building Project :

New Drop-Off Plaza

The renovated area will boast wider, more gradual steps, an updated ramp, and a canopy-covered front door make for a more welcoming and safer entry for students and community members.

New Reception Office with adjacent Health Room

This new space will be relocated to the entry vestibule, enhancing security and providing mission appropriate, connected, and warm space to care for children when they are under the weather.

Renovated Entry Hall with new meeting room and relocated school store

These areas will serve as a more welcoming and warm, community-building spaces.

2-Story Atrium

The atrium will preserve natural light at the building’s core.

Technology Lab

The design includes the addition of a new state-of-the-art 20 work station technology lab facility, loaded with educational software, a flexible teacher station for greater student interaction and support, and increased ability to tie research skills to technology.

Repurposed Space

The new facilities will free up significant existing space, including the current split libraries, to be re-allocated to meet other programmatic needs.

New Multipurpose Room

Versatile space that can be divided into 1, 2 or 3 rooms to be used for

  • large or small classes and gatherings
  • student council meetings
  • lunch service
  • indoor recess
  • spectator seating for assemblies or sporting events in Jones Hall
  • simultaneous PE classes
  • schedule flexibility

New Classrooms and Classroom Expansion

Additional Classrooms and Office Space

A stack of two new classrooms will be added adjacent to the 1996 wing, creating the opportunity for dedicated classrooms for special subjects and necessary office space.

Enclosed Exterior Walkway

Breezeway linking the current main entryway to the Kindergarten and 1st Grade hall will be enclosed, improving energy efficiency and security, while maintaining the character of this original part of the building.

Expansion of Classrooms

Eight classrooms on the south side of the building will be extended, giving breathing room for individual classrooms, physically connecting them, and adding more than 1,300 square feet of classroom space.

MCN Build is the contractor for the project.  Construction is scheduled to wrap up in September of this year.
