May 2, 2014. This past weekend, the U.S. Green Building Council hosted its second annual DC NoVA MD Green School Summit. The National Capital Region and Maryland Chapters celebrated this year’s theme, The Intersection of STEM and Sustainability, bringing together building professionals and K-12 school personnel to share best practices related to sustainable schools.
cox graae + spack architects Principal, William (Bill) Spack, attended the event, presenting a Case Study in STEM Planning, Curriculum and Design for DC’s award-winning HD Wooodson STEM High School. As Principal-in-Charge for the project, Mr. Spack discussed how the STEM curriculum was introduced and integrated, as well as philosophic underpinnings of the program and principles that steered the school’s design. The Case Study was concluded by an overview outlining how the LEED Gold Certified design specifically incorporates Woodson’s STEM curriculum, while embracing community needs and innovative sustainable design features.
