cox graae + spack architects attends Chancellor’s Address on the State of DC’s Public Schools

October 23, 2013. On October 17, 2013, members of the community including representatives from roughly 15 architectural firms, joined Chancellor Kaya Henderson as she gave her address on the state of DC Public Schools.  The gathering took place at the newly renovated Cardoza Education Campus in Northwest Washington, DC from 7pm – 9pm.

Chancellor Henderson, along with the DCPS Leadership team, discussed their plans to continue the mission of working closely with families, community members and partners to build a high quality, vibrant school district that provides a world-class education and facilities for all.

A portion of the Chancellors Address program was dedicated to discussing past renovation and modernization efforts in the District’s schools.  cox graae + spack architects displayed images of the newly completed Flora Hendley Elementary School as well as concepts for one of the city’s most attention drawing and exciting projects currently under design, the Duke Ellington School of the Arts.  The aforementioned projects are two of seven schools cox graae + spack architects has designed, or is currently designing, under the District of Columbia Public Schools Modernization Program.

Metrics indicate that the city’s partnerships with local architects in the modernization of DC schools are beneficial and accomplishing milestones indicated in the early phases of the program.  Test scores have improved across the District and enrollment has increased according to the Washington Post.

The work being done in DC schools shows members of communities they serve, that the Districts’ schools are safe, state of the art facilities with elements in place to prepare students for the increasingly innovative world we live in.  cox graae + spack architects is proud to play a continuing role in this important work.
